"Parts of A Man"

Glide Magazine today premiered the music video for "Parts of A Man", the first single from our upcoming album 'Running From Love'. (Pre-order Now)

"At its core, soul music that is actually good is music that dwells on heartbreak and pain yet translates to a sense of pleasure and redemption for the audience. This is something that is often lost in the “modern” soul music that infatuates so many hipsters today when they fall in love with bands who seemingly preach soulful songs but fail to deliver the emotional goods. For Nebraska band Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal, the heartbreak and pain is a driving force that comes natural, and when it comes to real soul music, they absolutely deliver."

Running From Love

NASHVILLE – Jan. 25th, 2016 – Josh Hoyer & Soul Colossal create a combination of soul, funk and R&B that’s, in a word, electric. The group’s blend of honest lyrics and sometimes in-your-face delivery is next displayed on Running from Love, their new album produced by Ken Coomer (Wilco, Uncle Tupelo) out April 8th, 2016, on Silver Street Records. Pre-order now!

Running from Love, the band’s third full-length album, features Hoyer’s trademark vocals and his top-notch band. Funky, groove-laden tracks like “Searchers” and“Soul Mechanic” are juxtaposed by soulful ballads like “Parts of A Man” and “Evening Train,” each taking listeners on a journey through the struggle to find contentment, the desire to change the world in front us for the better and the universal need for more love.

Recorded at Nashville’s Sound Emporium, the project began after producer Ken Coomer heard about the band’s live show – a high-energy display of musicianship with one goal each night, to have the crowd dancing so much they forget even their smallest troubles. Inspired by Stax, Motown, New Orleans, Philly and San Francisco, the six-piece continuously crosses musical boundaries both in style and era.

The hard-working band completed several national tours in 2015, playing more than 150 shows in 32 states, including opening for R&B legends George Clinton/Funkadelic and Booker T Jones. During small breaks from relentless touring, Josh Hoyer and Soul Colossal also released a live album, Cooked Raw, in November on limited edition vinyl.

Cooked Raw caught the attention of Glide, Elmore and Mix magazines, among others. No Depression said, “If James Brown and Otis Redding had a love child, it would be Josh Hoyer. The Lincoln, Nebraska, soul shouter, and his band of merry soulsters, Soul Colossal, deliver a sound so big, so funky, so wring-the-sweat-out-of-you energetic that it reaches through the speakers and shakes you until you start moving to its groove."

Running From Love is set for release on April 8th, 2016, on Silver Street Records, and will be released on vinyl, CD and digital formats. Pre-order now!

The band will support the release of the new album with a tour through the Midwest and Southern markets, including Omaha, Denver, Milwaukee, Madison, Minneapolis, Chicago, St Louis, Indianapolis, and Nashville, among others.

Elmore Magazine 'Cooked Raw' Review

Elmore Magazine had great things to say about our latest release, ‘Cooked Raw’, and premiered “Blood and Bone” from the album.

“Today, Elmore is premiering “Blood and Bone,” a song off of the band’s latest release, ‘Cooked Raw’. It’s a funky, wailing track that captures the raw and rough sound of a live performance that crackles and bursts with energy. Horns soar throughout the jam, creating a playful but fierce conversation with Hoyer. “See, the horns got soul!” Hoyer shouts in a James Brown-eqsue rasp.”

“Josh Hoyer and the Soul Colossal’s sound recalls pioneers in the genres of soul and funk, from Otis Redding to Curtis Mayfield. But with a relentless drive and ability to pour their heart out on stage night after night and always feel genuine, these guys are churning out something uniquely their own.”
